MI Constitution (ARTICLE XI, § 2): The terms of office of elective state officers,
members of the legislature and justices and judges of courts of record shall
begin at 12 o’clock noon on the 1st day of January next succeeding their election.

From 1850 to 1962 Michigan elected a State Treasurer, State Auditor General, State
Land Commissioner and a Superintendent of Public Instruction.
From 1909 to 1962 the state elected a State Highway Commissioner.

Cities may choose between a mayor-council form of government, a city commission form of government, or a council-manager form of government depending upon their type.

Villages are required to have a weak mayor-council form of government. Villages are not completely autonomous and share some responsibilities with their township.

Townships include all areas not part of an incorporated city. All townships have a weak mayor-council government. Charter Townships may levy taxes and appoint a superintendent or manager.

Municipality Maps include Cities and Townships, which are autonomous units.

Place Maps include Villages and Census Designated Places (CDPs).

Registration is Nonpartisan.
