Description | The Washington Party was the name of the PA affiliate of the Progressive Party (1912--1918). The party carried the state in the presidential race in 1912 and elected many local officials. The party slowly lost support as its voters returned to the GOP. In 1916, the party held a presidential primary which TR won by a margin of 3,715 to 2,043 for write-ins. By that time, the party was reduced to endorsing like-minded major party candidates. The Washington Party ran no nominees after 1918. |
