BBC Constituency Profile:
Situated north-east of Cardiff, the constituency is based around the town of Caerphilly, famous for its castle, cheese and for being the birthplace of comedian Tommy Cooper. The seat stretches north of the town to take in former mining communities along the Rhymney valley.
The constituency has a high proportion of residents suffering from health problems with just 75.7% describe themselves as being in good health, the 29th lowest of any constituency in the UK.
The seat has been Labour-held since 1918, save for a period between 1981-83 when the sitting MP, Ednyfed Hudson Davies defected to the SDP. In 2010 Wayne David won with 44.9% of the vote, ahead of the Conservatives on 17.1%, Plaid Cymru on 16.7%, the Liberal Democrats on 14.7% The BNP scored 4.2% and UKIP 2.4%
