Description |
Fylde is a constituency in which the Conservatives have an excellent track record. They have held the seat - and its predecessor, South Fylde - since 1918. It was the safest seat in mainland Britain in 1979 and only in 1997 has the Tory share of the vote dropped below 50%. Located on the west Lancashire coast, this is a largely rural seat. The exceptions to this are the genteel, retirement seaside resort of Lytham St Anne's (home to a championship golf course and the Ernie premium bond centre) Kirkham, and Cottam, a suburb of Preston. More than 21% of the electorate is over 65 with a further quarter over 45. Almost 80% are owner-occupiers and only 3% local authority renters. Unemployment is low: apart from tourism, there is a British Nuclear Fuels Ltd and UK Atomic Energy Authority plants at Salwick and British Aerospace at Warton. Michael Jack has represented Fylde since the retirement of Sir Edward Gardiner in 1987 and in 2001 defended the seat with a majority of 9,610.
