Description Brunswick County was formed in 1764 from portions of New Hanover and Bladen Counties. It was named for the town of Brunswick, which was in turn named for King George I, Duke of Brunswick. The county seat was at Brunswick 1764-79, then Walkersburg 1779-1810, then Smithville 1810-87, then Southport 1887-1977, and currently is Bolivia.
