Info | CROWNINSHIELD, Jacob, (brother of Benjamin Williams Crowninshield), a Representative from Massachusetts; born in Salem, Mass., March 31, 1770; engaged in mercantile pursuits; unsuccessful candidate for election in 1798 to the Sixth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Dwight Foster; member of the State senate in 1801; was tendered the position of Secretary of the Navy by President Jefferson, but never entered upon his duties on account of ill health; elected as a Republican to the Eighth, Ninth, and Tenth Congresses and served from March 4, 1803, until his death in Washington, D.C., on April 15, 1808; chairman, Committee on Commerce and Manufactures (Ninth Congress); interment in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Salem, Mass.
