In 1983 Michael Hirst won predecessor seat Strathkelvin and Bearsden for the Conservatives before losing to Labour's Sam Galbraith in 1987. Galbraith increased his majority in 1992 and in 1997.
In 2001 Sam Galbraith retired and John Lyons succeeded him as Labour MP. The Liberal Democrats jumped from fourth place to second, with the SNP finishing third, only 40 votes ahead of the Conservatives.
Following boundary changes for the 2005 general election most constituents of Strathkelvin and Bearsden were included in the new seat of East Dunbartonshire. As well as voters from Strathkelvin and Bearsden, the new seat included voters from the eastern wards of Clydebank and Milngavie, and from Coatbridge and Chryston. Liberal Democrat Jo Swinson took the seat from Labour in 2005.
There are no boundary changes affecting this seat.
East Dunbartonshire is situated to the north-east of Glasgow. Most of its residential areas are commuter dormitories with much of the population travelling into Glasgow for work.
Bearsden began as a Roman fort on the short-lived Antonine Wall, which was the northernmost boundary of the Roman Empire. The modern town grew as an outer suburb of Glasgow.
Bishopbriggs was a quarrying, mining and manufacturing area. Since the end of quarrying and the decline of heavy industry the town grew as a housing area outside Glasgow.

The coalmines and many of the mills and large-scale employers have closed. The constituency's major employer is now the large Stobhill Hospital.
A new prison near Bishopbriggs replaces the old HMP Low Moss. The Scottish Prison Service (SPS) intended to name the new prison HMP Bishopbriggs. This met with much local resistance to having the town's name associated with a prison. Due to open in 2011, the SPS has stated that the prison will be named HMP Low Moss.
