InfoJo Swinson was brought up in East Dunbartonshire, where she attendedDouglas Academy in Milngavie. Jo graduated from the London School ofEconomics with a First Class Honours degree in Management, and then moved to Yorkshire where she worked as the Marketing & PR Manager for the radio station Viking FM.

In the 2001 General Election she achieved a 6% swing to the Lib Dems as the candidate against the Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott in Hull East. In 2003 Jo stood for the Scottish Parliament in Strathkelvin & Bearsden, increasing the Lib Dem vote by 4% compared to the 1999 result. Jo has been an active member of the Liberal Democrats since 1997. As a student she was Secretary and then Vice Chair of the Liberal Democrat Youth & Students and launched the campaign website www.scraptuitionfees.com. In 2002, Jo was an elected member of the Liberal Democrats' Federal Executive and since 2003 has been a Vice Chair of the Party's Gender Balance Task Force.

Jo has spoken in Conference debates on education, pensions, transport, community planning, business, age discrimination and summed up a key amendment in 2002 against the introduction of all women shortlists for candidate selection. Jo was one of the main speakers at the opening rally of the Liberal Democrats' 2003 Conference to mark the centenary of the Young Liberal movement.

As the Marketing Manager for Glasgow-based company SpaceandPeople, Jo helped the company win national awards including Best E-Business at the Scottish Winners at the Web Awards 2003.

Jo now works as the Scottish Development Officer for the UK Public Health Association. She lives in Milngavie and is a member of the Milngavie Community Council. Her interests include hiking, reading everything from Philip Pullman to Jane Austen, going to the gym and salsa dancing.
