Description | The seat became vacant when Benn inherited his fathers hereditary peerage and became ineligable to sit in the Commons. Benn stood in the subsequent by-election but, as he was still ineligable to sit in the Commons, St Clair was declared to be the winner despite polling fewer votes than Benn.
St Clair resigned his seat in 1963 after Benn had succesfully renounced his peerage, sparking another by-election. |
