DescriptionThe American Party in the first GWB administration

The emergence of the Constitution Party drained most of the energy out of other right-wing parties. The American Party failed to make it onto the ballot in any state in 2000, and state affiliates became increasingly inactive.

The convention gathered in Newark DE on 7/11-12/2003. Robert N. Boyd of Fortville IN was nominated for President, and Walter C. Thompson of Culpeper VA was nominated for Vice President.

On 7/24/2003, Boyd withdrew from the race. He was surprised how difficult it was to wage a third party effort and was not able to make the investment of time and energy. Thompson later withdrew as well.

Replacement Ticket

The American Party's Executive Committee met at the Travelodge in Kenner LA (near New Orleans) on 1/10/2004 and nominated Templin for President by a vote of 7 to 6 for Al Moore. At the time of her nomination, Templin was a candidate for the U.S. House on the American Independent Party ticket in California. Moore was then unanimously nominated for VP. The party's website was partially updated to cover her selection, but remnants of the Rogers campaign of 1996 remained on the party's website as of 3/1/2008 (removed by 11/28/2008).

The Campaign

As it turned out, the American Party failed to gain ballot status in any state again in 2004. Templin was pre-occupied with her race for Congress. The party reported that it planned to achieve ballot status in Louisiana and Utah, but it was not successful. When the party failed to file as an official write-in ticket in any state, Templin received no certified votes.
