Description | BBC Profile:
Glasgow South West was created in the 2005 boundary changes and is largely the old Pollok seat. Ian Davidson became that seat's MP in 1997, polling 60% of the vote, ahead of the SNP on 18%.
In 2001 Davidson again polled 60%, as the SNP dropped back to 17%.
The 2005 boundary changes which brought Govan, Ibrox and Mosspark into the Glasgow South West seat did not alter its political character. At the general election Davidson was the only Glasgow MP to improve on his notional majority from 2001 as he was returned with a majority of 44.8%.
There are no boundary changes affecting this seat.
The decline of shipbuilding hit the northern part of this Clydeside seat very hard, though Govan is home to one of Glasgow's two remaining shipyards.
The area is marked by post-war social housing and industrial decline, although one of the country's first ever industrial estates at Hillington is still going strong.
The constituency now includes a strip of the ex-industrial Clydeside, home to the working Govan shipyard, which is crucially dependent on Royal Navy and Ministry of Defence contracts. The Clydeside areas of Ibrox and Govan are the constituency's most deprived. There are some better estates towards the old pit village at Nitshill.
Ibrox Stadium, the home of Glasgow Rangers, is at the heart of the constituency.
