| Description | Through 151 ballots, the legislature failed to bring 57 votes together in order to elect a US Senator. John B. Allen, the highest candidate, never received more than 52 votes, and, given that no candidate received the needed votes, Gov. John McGraw appointed Allen to the seat. The United States Senate later ruled Gov. McGraw had no power to appoint and ruled Allen's election void.
