Obama taps Locke as China ambassador

Description | President Obama nominated Commerce Secretary Gary Locke today to be his new ambassador to China, saying the former Washington governor understands the U.S.-Chinese relationship and has "the trust of business leaders."
Locke said he is humbled by the appointment, and that he will return to the homeland of his grandfather, father, and other as "a devoted and passionate advocate for America."
If confirmed by the Senate, Locke would be the first Chinese-American to be ambassador to Beijing, one of the top posts in the U.S. diplomatic corps; Obama called the U.S.-Chinese relationship "one of the most critical of the 21st Century. |
