Info | State Representative, 1983-1994
King County Executive, 1994-1997
Governor, 1997-2005
Gary Locke became the first Chinese-American governor in the history of the United States on November 5, 1996, when he defeated Ellen Craswell to become the 21st governor of Washington. After a successful first term, the enormously popular governor defeated challenger John Carlson to win his second term.
Locke was born into an immigrant family in a Seattle public housing project for World War II veterans. In his youth, Locke worked in his father's grocery store and became an Eagle Scout before graduation from Franklin High School with honors in 1968. Locke then attended Yale University, where he received a bachelor's degree in political science four years later. Locke then went on to get a law degree from Boston University in 1975.
Following his degrees at Yale and Boston University, Locke returned home to King County, where he initially worked as a deputy prosecutor. In 1982, he was elected to the Washington State House of Representatives, where he was chairman of the House Appropriations Committee. In 1993, Locke was elected King County's chief executive, where he oversaw the state's most complex urban area.
Locke married former KING 5 news reporter, Mona Lee Locke, on October 15, 1994. They have a daughter, Emily Nicole, and a son, Dylan James. His Chinese name is Luo Jiahui.
