Description | This is the most northerly of the Greater London seats. The constituency is part industrial and part residential, ranging from green belt in the west, to tower blocks and an industrial area east of the Great Cambridge Road, down by the River Lea. Enfield Chase is open countryside that merges into Hertfordshire on the other side of the M25. Engineering, chemicals, printing and food processing are the main industries here. There is a fair amount of suburban territory with an above average 70% owner-occupation. Enfield North is a marginal constituency, formed by the merger of Labour Enfield East and most of Tory Enfield West. This is still apparent with Conservative support in the middle class areas of the west, town centre and Chase. The eastern side of the constituency votes Labour, but there is some influence of neighbouring Tory Essex - Chingford and Epping Forest are just across the river. Labour's Joan Ryan won here in 1997, after seven years on Barnet Council - three as deputy leader. In 2001, Ms Ryan's majority dropped from 6,822 to 2,291 over the Conservatives with almost 1,500 votes going to other parties (UKIP, BNP and Pro-Life candidates). Ms Ryan is currently a whip in charge of London and health. At the 2002 local elections, the Conservatives won all the wards in this constituency apart from Ponders End. However, the next set of boundary changes is expected to give this to neighbouring Edmonton.
