Description

BBC Constituency Profile:

Witham town forms the urban heart of this largely rural constituency which was created in 2010 in recognition of Essex's growing population. The town itself, which is on the Great Eastern mainline between London and Norwich, includes several London overspill estates built in the 1960s and 70s.

The seat as a whole is largely prosperous, with affluent commuter villages and farming communities. The small town of Tiptree is famous for jam-making, picturesque Coggeshall used to be a centre for silk making and the fishing village of Tollesbury is well known for harvesting oysters from the Blackwater estuary.

The constituency has a high number of home owners and few council homes, according to the 2011 Census. Manufacturing, construction and health are important local employers along with finance and insurance. There are higher than average number of retired residents. Conservative Priti Patel won in 2010 with 52.2% of the vote, the Lib Dems got 19.8%, Labour 18.5% and UKIP 6.5%.
