Description BBC Constituency Profile:

Belfast South is home to many of Belfast's most historic landmarks such as City Hall, the opera house and the famous Victorian Crown Bar. Queen's University and its large student population are within its boundaries, as is Northern Ireland's first integrated school, Lagan College. The constituency contains one of the city's most affluent areas, Malone, but there are also working class estates.

In 2013, it had a population of 112,000. At the last census, there was an equal split of Catholics and Protestants. Almost 57% were employed.

Politically, Rev Robert Bradford held the seat, first for Vanguard, then as an Ulster Unionist, from February 1974 until he was killed by the IRA in 1981. Rev Martin Smyth won the resulting by-election and held the seat for the Ulster Unionists until 2005. A split unionist vote subsequently allowed the SDLP's Alasdair McDonnell to become the seat's first nationalist representative at Westminster.
