Description BBC Profile:
In 1997 Brian Cotter ended the 74-year Tory reign and captured the seat for the Liberal Democrats, by a majority of 2.4%. His margin of victory was significantly less in 2001, and in 2005, John Penrose reclaimed the seat for the Conservatives with a majority of 2,079.

Boundary changes for this general election are negligible. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

This affluent constituency lies along the west coast, south-west of Bristol, and runs from the Severn estuary in the west to the Mendip Hills in the east. The constituency centres on the town of Weston-super-Mare and includes surrounding villages such as Churchill, Winscombe and Sandford.

Within its borders lies a mixture of urban and rural areas. Nearly 75% of the constituencys electors live in Weston and a further 20,000 voters live in the large, sparsely populated area outside the town.

The town of Weston-super-Mare is a major tourist destination known for its beaches, picturesque architecture and long promenade. Shopping, restaurants, hotels, and other sundry businesses are a major component of the local economy.

A variety of other industries have a presence in the area, including First Group. There are also many commuters.
