Description
BBC Profile:
This has always been a Conservative seat. First elected as MP for Hampshire North West in 1997, Sir George Young took over this seat with a five-figure majority after it was vacated by Sir David Mitchell.

Sir George has been a Conservative MP since being elected for Ealing Acton in February 1974, from where he moved after the London constituency disappeared as a result of boundary changes. He increased his share of the vote in 2001 and again in 2005.

At the election, the seat loses the part-wards of Hatch Warren and Beggarwood, Popley West and Rooksdown to Basingstoke and the part-ward of Sherborne St John to North East Hampshire. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

North West Hampshire covers the northern part of the Test Valley, where the largest community is Andover, and includes scores of picturesque hamlets and a generous acreage of rolling Hampshire countryside.

The industrial parks on its outskirts, largely the result of overspill from London in the early 1960s, have not detracted significantly from the market town atmosphere of present day Andover.

Agricultural and manufacturing industries are both relatively strong here, as is the financial services industry with Lloyds TSB and Scottish Widows among those providing many of the plentiful service sector jobs.

Other employers include Vitacress, Corby, Siemens-Plessey, Sky, John Lewi
