BBC Profile:
Prior to 1997 the seat changed hands no fewer than 13 times between 1918 an 1987. The constituency was extensively re-modelled for the 1997 general election, when it was won by Labour, which held it in 2001. In 2005, the seat was taken for the Conservatives by current MP Mark Pritchard, with a majority of 942 votes.
Minor boundary changes see little change to the make-up of the constituency. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
The Wrekin consists of a horseshoe-shaped area of Shropshire that curves around the new town of Telford.
The seat includes some of the northern areas of Telford, the market towns of Wellington and Newport, the old mining towns of Hadley and Donnington, and Wolverhampton commuter towns of Shifnal and Albrighton in the south east. It is a semi-rural seat, geographically dominated by the Wrekin, whose summit commands a view of 12 counties.
The area is diverse: it slips from factory to farmland, from hamlet to housing estate, and from foundry to business park.
The seat is home to Harper Adams Agricultural University College and has a large agriculture sector. There is also a substantial military presence in the area, with RAF Cosford situated close to Wolverhampton.
GKN Sankey, which assembles BT telephone kiosks, and Aga-Rayburn have been local landmarks for many years.
