The Labour vote in Lewisham Deptford has rarely dropped below 50%. Joan Ruddock MP inherited the constituency following her predecessor John Silkin's death in 1987 and has held it ever since. The Green Party has made the seat one of its main targets in 2010 after it won 11% of the vote in 2005.
At the election, boundary changes mean the seat gains the Crofton ward from Lewisham West and Lewisham Central ward from Lewisham East. It loses Rushey Green to Lewisham East.

With the River Thames as its northernmost boundary, Lewisham Deptford ranges from inner city wards to the somewhat leafier Brockley.
Demographically, there is a large black population in the seat, as well as a sizeable student population, due to the presence of Goldsmiths College. More than 40% of residents live in council or housing association property.
There have been millions of pounds of investment in the Silwood Estate, which spans the Deptford-Southwark border, and in the New Cross Gate area through the Single Regeneration Budget and the New Deal for Communities budget.
Nevertheless, poverty and low-quality housing are still significant issues in the constituency.
The Brockley area is undergoing some gentrification and the extension of the London Overground to the area has made it more appealing to young professionals looking for
