Mr Timms has held the seat since then, but his majority in the 2005 election was cut to 13,155, with a 19.9% swing to the newly-formed Respect party.

The area benefits from the Thames Gateway regeneration of the London Riverside area. The Silvertown Quays redevelopment project close to the Royal Victoria Dock will be developed in four phases into the 2020s.

Projects under way for the 2012 Olympics should help to regenerate the Lea Valley area, of which the constituency is a part.
