Description
BBC Profile:
Labour's Stephen Timms won the seat in 1994 in the by-election following the death of Ron Leighton, also Labour.

Mr Timms has held the seat since then, but his majority in the 2005 election was cut to 13,155, with a 19.9% swing to the newly-formed Respect party.

At this election, East Ham has gained parts of the Beckton and Royal Docks wards from the old Poplar and Canning Town seat and part of Boleyn from West Ham, and has lost its part of Custom House ward to West Ham. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

The constituency contains the King George V and the Royal Albert docks, City airport and Green Street, the UK's most successful Asian shopping street.

The ExCel exhibition centre at the Royal Docks attracts thousands of visitors, and is providing the impetus for the building of seven new international hotels in its immediate vicinity.

The area benefits from the Thames Gateway regeneration of the London Riverside area. The Silvertown Quays redevelopment project close to the Royal Victoria Dock will be developed in four phases into the 2020s.

Projects under way for the 2012 Olympics should help to regenerate the Lea Valley area, of which the constituency is a part. The Olympic park will bring jobs and investment to the borough, including a media and communications hub, a new park running through the heart of the borough, an aquatic centre
