Description BBC Profile:
In 1997 an 11.8% swing to the Liberal Democrat candidate Tom Brake was enough to remove Conservative Nigel Forman, who had been MP for 21 years. In 2001 the Liberal Democrats more than doubled their majority.

In 2005 there was a 4.4% swing to the Conservatives, but Brake was returned with a 1,068 majority.

There are minor boundary changes at the election: the six wards that straddled the seat and Sutton and Cheam have been realigned: Carshalton Central, St Helier, and the Wrythe wards are now entirely within Carshalton and Wallington; while Belmont, Sutton Central, and Sutton South wards are completely contained in Sutton and Cheam. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

Carshalton and Wallington is a socially mixed constituency consisting on the one hand of leafy suburbs, such as those around Carshalton Beeches, and on the other of estates in places such as Wrythe and Beddington.

Many of the seats large number of skilled non-manual workers either commute in to central London or nearby Croydon.
