Description |
The Social Democrats originally nominated John G. McLaughlin for the race, but he withdrew and endorsed the Fusion ticket. By the time the Social Democrats met again, they were using the label "Socialist Party"; they nominated a man only identified as "S. Van Dyke" as a replacement nominee. Then Van Dyke switched his support from Debs to Bryan. The Fusion leadership tried to get Van Dyke's name removed from the ballot, but a judge ruled that he was still the Socialist nominee and kept his name on the ballot (Topeka Daily Capital, 10/16,18/1900).
