Description |
The day after the 1981 election, Livingstone challenged the leadership of the Labour Party and defeated the previous leader, Andrew McIntosh, by a vote of 30 to 20. As new leader of the Labour Party, he became GLC leader the following day.
For a short period in late 1984 John Wilson sat in the leadership in place of Livingstone when the latter and three other Labour members resigned their seats to force by-elections meant to demonstrate public support for the GLC as Parliament considered abolishing the body. The Conservative Party did not run candidates in the by-election, leading to low turnout, thereby keeping Livingstone from scoring a media victory. The Local Government Act of 1985 was passed in the House of Commons in December 1984, abolishing the GLC effective March 31, 1986.
