Voting began during a Joint Session of the Colorado General Assembly on January 17, 1883. Through successive votes requiring a majority of the those present at the joint session, a Senator was chosen on January 27, 1883.
From the House Journal of the 4th General Assembly dated January 27, 1883:
Mr. Bergh moved we do now proceed to vote for U. S. Senator for the long term, commencing March 4th, 1883, which was agreed to, and gentlemen as their names were called voted viva voce as follows: For Hon. T. M. Bowen, Messrs. Cochrane, Eddy, Elder, Freeman, Gale, Galloway, Howard, Howbert, Kearney, Moynahan, Stanger, Streeter, Tedmon and Weston, of the Senate, and Messrs. Anguin, Archeluta, Baldwin, Ballard, Benson, Bergh, Breen, Clark of Arapahoe, Clark of Boulder, Craig, Curtice, Darling, Dripps, Ford, Green, Haskell, Hoffman, Holly, Jones, Kerr, King, La Fever, Mc lntire, Mears, Osbiston, Perrin, Pierce, Pisko, Rivera, Rockafellow, Sample, Sopris, Trippe, Van Valkenberg, Walker and Mr. Speaker. Total, 50.
For Hon. T. M. Patterson, Messrs. Barela, Bostwick, Corder, DeFrance, Hall, Parsons, Robinson, Rising and Tilford, of the Senate, and Messrs. Abeyta, Blonger, Butcher, Chapman, Costello, Kirk, Lee, Letcher, Mc Closkey, Orman, Royal and Shackelford, of the House. Total, 21.
