Democratic nomination
The Democratic district convention met in Greensboro on 8/15/1878. The delegates nominated Scales for another term unanimously (Raleigh News, 8/17/1878).
Republican nomination
The Republican district convention met in Graham on 9/1/1878. William F. Henderson had been the only active contender for the nomination earlier in the year, but he stepped aside for Tourgee, who initially announced as an independent (Raleigh News, 9/20/1878).
Greenback candidacy
John R. Winston was the Greenback candidate. He withdrew from the race on 10/12/1878 (Danbury Reporter, 10/17/1878).
