Denny Heck did it here in WA just last year, and won quite comfortably. Rob Bishop out in Utah did as well (not so lucky.) It's not as uncommon as folks think.

Todd Platts https://www.ourcampaigns.com/CandidateDetail.html?CandidateID=1662 is an interesting and more recent example: a U.S. Representative running for (and winning) a seat on a county trial court, defeating the sitting judge purely on name recognition, within a year of leaving Congress, and all despite being resoundingly not recommended by the county bar.
That one was a head-scratcher for me, but I guess it's a decent retirement gig for a career politician.
