Description |
Presidential Electors were chosen by electoral district.
Election day was quite cold. George Washington recorded in his diary that the temperature was 32 when he arose in the morning and only increased to 39 by noon.
After the election, the sheriffs in each district met together to certify the winners. Several of the sheriffs failed to attend, including all of the sheriffs in what is today Kentucky. In the Ninth District, two of the four sheriffs did not attend the canvass; the remaining two sheriffs recorded their votes but did not certify a winner since they were unsure what to do.
Presidential Electors: (1) John Pride, (2) John Harvie, (3) Zechariah Johnston, (4) John Roane (one of three Clinton Electors chosen), (5) David Stuart, (6) W. Fitzhugh, (7) James Wood, (8) Anthony Walke, (9) [Samuel Kello apparently elected but not certified; no vote cast], (10) Patrick Henry; (11) Edward Stevens, and (12) [Lewis Warner - did not attend or cast his electoral vote].
