DescriptionCenter-left party launched and led by opposition veteran, Sin Kek Tong, who relinquished his post in 1994 to Singapore's longest-serving opposition MP, Chiam See Tong.

Chiam had long been a thorn on the side of Singapore's first prime minister, Lee Kuan Yew, and Singapore's one-party state, generally.

After Chiam's retirement, the SPP fell into disrepute under its new scandal-prone leader, former MP Steve Chia, who took over the party with Jose Raymond on November 5, 2019.

The SPP has failed to pick up a single seat in Singapore's Parliament since 2011 and has seen its popularity fall precariously under Chia's leadership.
