Description | Pro-government agrarian-socialist party and one of 15 created when Belarus established itself as a multiparty system in 1992 when the Soviet Union collapsed on December 25, 1991. Party began as the United Agrarian Democratic Party of Belarus until rebranded on January 28, 1994. Party was able to enter parliament on its first attempt in 1995, gaining 34 seats that year. Party was founded by Syamyon Sharetski, who was the last Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of Belarus (January 10, 1996 to November 28, 1996). Sharetski's criticisms of President Alexander Lukashenko over the results of the 1996 constitutional referendum forced Sharetski into exile to the USA. Party subsequently collapsed to 5 seats after elections held in 2000 and lost all its seats eight years later. On August 11, 2023, the Supreme Court of Belarus liquidated the Belarusian Agrarian Party, ostensibly because it was no longer useful to the regime [Беларуская аграрная партыя (БАП); Bielaruskaja ahrarnaja partyja (BAP)]. |
