Description | Right-of-center party supporting direct democracy and the elimination of all government directives to control speech. Party was founded as the "Demokratene" (Democrats; DEM) on August 24, 2002 by the former MP and deputy leader of the Progress Party Vidar Kleppe. Kleppe's abrupt departure from Progress in 2001 impelled a number of his followers from mainly center-left parties to join him in 2002. Party was rebranded "Demokratane i Noreg" (Democrats in Norway, DiN) in 2010, then renamed Democrats in 2018. Party was uprooted by new leadership in 2021, which brought about its dissolution and re-registration to its present-day Norgesdemokratene (Norway Democrats, ND) in 2023, and the expulsion of Kleppe and its team in Kristiansand and Southern Norway, which devastated its bench in Kristiansand. Party took a stand that Western liberal values and women's rights were being undermined by mass immigration from Muslim countries, and added objections to Norway's lack of neutrality in the Ukraine-Russia conflict. Party has been led by businessman Geir Ugland Jacobsen since May 29, 2021 [Norgesdemokratene (ND)]. |
