Description | Center-right, 'classical liberal' party founded by journalist and personality Anders Lange in 1973 as the protest party "Anders Lange's Party for a sharp reduction of taxes, fees and public intervention" (ALP). ALP stood for economic liberalism, anti-communism, lower taxes and fees and less bureaucracy. After Lange's death in late 1974, ALP was renamed the Progress Party (FrP) in 1977. Support for the FrP steadily rose until it became the Storting's second-largest party after the 2005 general election with 38 seats, increasing to 41 after elections held in 2009. The FrP entered a government for the first time in October 2013, in coalition with Erna Solberg's Conservative Party. FrP has been led by 2021 prime ministerial candidate Sylvi Listhaug since May 8, 2021 [Fremskrittspartiet (FrP)]. |
