DescriptionRome (CNN) Italy's Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte told the Italian Senate on Tuesday that he will resign.

Conte said the right-wing Interior Minister and the leader of the League party, Matteo Salvini, was "irresponsible" to start Italy's current political crisis.
Conte, a law professor with no previous political experience, became prime minister in June 2018, after the right-wing League and anti-establishment Five Star Movement reached a coalition agreement.

The two populist, euroskeptic parties secured the most votes in the March 2018 election, but the coalition fell apart this month over disagreements on key policies.

Conte's resignation could put Italy on a path to fresh elections that Salvini has called for.
