DescriptionThe Legislature today unanimously approved Scott Angelle, Gov. Bobby Jindal's chief legislative lobbyist and Department of Natural Resources secretary , as the state's interim lieutenant governor until a new one is elected this fall.

The Senate took the first step toward approving Angelle on a 33-0 vote. The House followed suit and approved him later, 100-0.

Angelle, 48, will temporarily step aside as natural resources secretary, but will retain the job as Jindal's legislative liaison. When a new lieutenant governor is elected this fall, Angelle said, he will return to the natural resources agency and continue as Jindal's legislative lobbyist.

To take the job, Angelle had to promise Jindal that he would not be a candidate in the fall elections. Jindal also is trying to abolish the office and farm out its duties to other agencies.

The appointment became necessary when former Lt. Mitch Landrieu was sworn in Monday as mayor of New Orleans. Jindal had been interviewing potential appointees for weeks before Landrieu's election in anticipation of his victory.
