Description | On May 25, 1825, William Digby, a trader and river pilot, and Robert Johnson, a surveyor, platted the town in an area overgrown with hazel and plum brush, grape vines, and large trees. The town site was located at the northernmost point that steamboats could travel up the Wabash on a plateau above the flood plain. Lafayette?s location promised cheap transportation and allowed for the development of the rich agricultural lands of the Wabash Valley. Now Lafayette has over 56,000 people living in it. Only an hour from Indy and across the river from Purdue University, it is a good location for those who enjoy the benifits of a big city without the problems that come with one.
