Description | The State of Delaware was preceded by "The Three Lower Counties on the Delaware River" which was a territorial colony operating within the Province of Pennsylvania.
Delaware broke ties from the United Kingdom and from Pennslyvania on June 15, 1776 (known as Separation Day). It was on this date that Delaware as a state officially began.
