| Description | Probably most famous for its international rugby ground, Twickenham is a leafy, largely white, residential, middle-class constituency to the south-west of London. It lies in the London Borough of Richmond. It has one of the highest proportions of managerial and professional workers. There is also a significant student population with Richmond College, a further education college of over 4,000 students, and St Mary's College within its boundaries. The seat also includes Hampton Court Palace, where Henry VIII held court, Horace Walpole's house at Strawberry Hill, Twickenham Film Studios - where "The Eagle Has Landed" and "The French Lieutenant's Woman" were produced - and Eel Pie Recording Studios owned by Pete Townshend. Twickenham is now one of the constituencies in the Liberal Democrat "band of gold", stretching between Carshalton and Wallington and the Thames at neighbouring Richmond Park. A Conservative stronghold since 1918, and formerly the seat of the Tories' Toby Jessel since 1970, it fell to Dr Vince Cable, the Lib Dem's shadow chancellor and one of the author's of the party's policy strategy, The Orange Book. His 4,281 majority in 1997 increased to 7,655 in 2001 with the Conservative vote falling away by over 5,000.
