DescriptionThis constituency comprises most, but not all, of this north-eastern coastal town between the River Tees and the Cleveland Hills. (Some of the more affluent districts are in the neighbouring Middlesborough South & Cleveland East.) This is extremely safe for Labour, and was one of the party's 50 safest in both 1997 and 2001. Middlesbrough is a largely white area with pockets of social deprivation and high unemployment. Its population has shrunk in previous years, as have the heavy industries on which economic prosperity previously depended. Landmarks include the famous Transporter Bridge and the Riverside stadium, home of the Premiership football club. Politically, Middlesbrough was first won by an Independent Labour candidate in 1892. Liberals and Conservatives took their turn before and after World War One. It was represented by Ellen Wilkinson in 1924 and the Liberals won in 1931 before Labour took over in 1935, holding on ever since. From 1983-date, Church Commissioner and author Stuart Bell has represented the seat. The town has an Independent elected mayor, Ray Mallon, the controversial former CID head who promoted a 'zero tolerance' policing policy.
