Description Terms are for four years; and begin and end on the second Monday of January in the year following the regular general election.

The Northern Mariana Islands Senate is configured similar to the US Senate.

The islands of Saipan, Rota and Tinian are each entitled to three (3) Senators.

The US Supreme Court has ruled this arrangement is permissable as the "one man, one vote" rule does not apply to this commonwealth. This, in effect, means that 10% of the population (comprised of Tinian and Rota) make up 2/3 of the Senate.
