Description Walthamstow was won by Labour from the Conservatives in 1992 by 3,000 votes. It was held by Neil Gerrard by 17,000 in 1997. In 2001 his overall vote dropped slightly, but his percentage majority increased to 44.1% The western side of the constituency was once the seat of post-war PM, Labour's Clement Attlee. Past Conservative success came in two by-elections during the Wilson government of 1966-70. But when the seat was amalgamated into one, Walthamstow returned to Labour in 1974. It was once again briefly Conservative between 1987 and 1992. Walthamstow was Britain's first working-class suburb, an example of early migration from the East End of London. It boasts the longest daily street market in Europe and a popular greyhound racing track. William Morris was born here in 1834. Benjamin Disraeli was educated locally, and film director, Ken Russell, attended college in Walthamstow. Since 1965, Walthamstow has formed part of the London Borough of Waltham Forest and is one of three parliamentary constituencies within the council's area. It is bordered by the Lea Valley - a Regional Park - to the west, and Epping Forest forms much of the eastern boundary. This is generally a working-class area but is showing signs of upward mobility.
