Description The constituency is 35 miles east of London on the northern shore of the Thames Estuary. It is made up of wards from the west side of the area covered by Southend Council. The town of Southend is now a major office and retailing centre. The town centre and main offices are found in the neighbouring constituency of Rochford and Southend East. This seat is a more up-market tourist area with some attractive residential suburbs. Particularly picturesque is Leigh-on-Sea. Originally a small fishing village surrounded by farmland, it has expanded over the years to become a thriving community of about 25,000 people. Today the active cockling fleet and boat building industry are balanced with tourism. The A127 cuts through the constituency, and effectively separates the two different parts of the seat. Below it is the traditional seaside resort, but above it is the mainly residential area comprising the relatively modern estates around Eastwood. The constituency also takes in Southend's small regional airport. Tory MP David Amess switched to Southend West from Basildon in 1997 and the area did not let him down, sending him back to Westminster by a nose. He consolidated his position in 2001, notching up a healthy 21.2% majority, aided by a collapse in the Lib Dem vote.
