Description |
The constituency covers a coastal strip in the north-eastern corner of Essex, taking in wards from Tendring council. The town has an important maritime history - Harwich was the first landfall for the ships which defeated the Spanish Armada. It was the site of a naval dockyard, which was arranged to be built by the 17th Century diarist Samuel Pepys, who himself served as MP for Harwich. The town also boasts the "Electric Palace", the oldest purpose-built cinema in the country. Today, it is still an important European ferry terminal, with a relatively new high-speed ferry link to the Hook of Holland. However, the local Merchant Navy fleet has been severely diminished over the last few decades. In addition to the port of Harwich, the constituency also includes the seaside resorts of Clacton, Frinton-on-Sea and Walton-on-the-Naze. As is common with many other seaside resorts the number of pensioners here is very high - at over 28% of the population, it has the third highest proportion of any seat in the UK. In 1997 Ivan Henderson became the town's first Labour MP. He held on to the seat in 2001, increasing his majority to 5.4%.
