circa 2005: Exeter is Devon's oldest city as well as its county town. It is almost exactly the ideal size to form a parliamentary seat on its own, and there have been no boundary seat changes since 1974. Labour's Ben Bradshaw took the seat on an 11.9% swing from the Conservatives in 1997. It was the first time Labour had held Exeter since 1966. Exeter offers all the variety and facilities of a city as well as being surrounded by rolling acres of green Devon countryside, within a few minutes' drive of the centre. One of Exeter's best known sites is St Peter's Cathedral. It was built in Norman times in 1114, but its present form was finished around 1375. The Cathedral has the longest unbroken Gothic vault ceiling in the world and one of the sculptured bosses from 1350 shows the murder of Thomas Beckett. Other sites to be seen around the historic Cathedral Close are Mol's Coffee House, once frequented by Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh and the Royal Clarence Hotel, the first Inn in England to be called a "Hotel". There is also Exeter Castle, which was built in 1068 by William the Conqueror. The county court, built in 1774, still occupies the inner part of the Castle. Ben Bradshaw consolidated his victory in 2001, when he increased his numerical majority in spite of a turnout which had fallen by 13%. No single party controls the city council - although Labour is the largest party with 18 seats. The Liberal Democrats come next with 12, followed by the Conservatives' five seats and the separate Liberal group which has four councillors.
