A Freeholder is an elected, part-time legislator on the county level of government.
The seven members of The Board of Chosen Freeholders are elected "At-Large"
to three-year staggered terms. They take office in January following the November
election. Each year the Board rotates the positions of Freeholder Chairman and
Freeholder Vice-Chair. State statutes determine the number of the freeholders on
a board largely according to classification and population. Freeholder Boards vary
from three to nine members.
