Merger of five multi-ethnic regions (or "Kililoch") in the southern part of the country, including (controversially) the secessionist-minded Sidama region, by the Ethiopian transitional government and officialized in its 1995 constitution. State's unwieldy name often simplified to the 'SNNPR'.
State also includes the Ilemi Triangle region claimed by Kenya and South Sudan.
