Info | Josiah Turner, Jr., Confederate congressman, editor, and militant foe of Reconstruction.
Born in Hillsborough to a longtime sheriff and large landowner in Orange County. Attended the Caldwell Institute at Greensboro and then a year at The University of North Carolina. Admitted to the bar about 1845.
NC House (W-Orange) 1852-1854
Candidate for NC Senate 1856
NC Senate 1858-1860. Opposed secession, but after the decision was made, he raised a cavalry company, serving until he was seriously wounded in 1862.
CS House 1863-1865. As an opponent of the Davis administration, Turner opposed conscription, impressment, taxation, and the suspension of habeas corpus.
Elected to US House 1865 but not allowed to serve.
President of the NC Railroad 1867
Turner owned the Raleigh Sentinel 1868-1876. He wrote articles opposing Reconstruction. Turner supported the Ku Klux Klan but does not appear to have been an actual member.
Declined to run as the Conservative candidate for US House in 1872, expecting to be granted a seat in the US Senate. When the Conservatives bypassed him for the Senate, Turner sought the congressional nomination in 1874 but was not nominated.
Independent nominee for NC Senate 1876 (with Republican support), then for US House 1878.
NC House 1878; expelled
Republican nominee for US House 1884
Loosely affiliated with the Populists, 1890s
Died at his home in Hillsborough.
