Info | David Stewart's election to Parliament in 1997 was the culmination of many years of political activism in Inverness, as a councillor and as a member of Labour's Scottish Executive.
In the Commons, he has made the needs of his marginal constituency a priority.
He was a leading advocate of Inverness' successful bid for Millennium City status, having campaigned for more than a decade on the subject.
He was also among the Labour MPs to call for cuts in fuel duty.
A former social worker, he is a member of the Tribune Group but has an abiding loyalty to the party leadership.
He was obliged to resign from the Scottish Affairs select committee after admitting to leaking a report to a minister.
He was, however, appointed to the Work and Pensions committee after the 2001 election.
