InfoFrancis A. Turner was born March 24, 1900, in Corning, Iowa, son of Austin B. Turner, Jr., and Ella S. Shuler Turner. He was a nephew of Dan W. Turner, former Governor of Iowa.


Senator Turner was educated in the Corning Public schools, Kiski prep school and Grinnell College, from which he received a B.A. degree in 1921.


He married LaNor Holmes of Keota, Iowa, in 1924. To this union was born a son, Austin B. Turner III, of Corning, and a daughter, Mrs. Bernard J. Hogan of Irving, Texas.


He was a merchant and farm manager in Corning since 1921, serving as an original member of the Corning municipal utilities board for twenty years, and as a member of the Corning public school board for eighteen years. For many years he was associated with his father at Turner’s Store, one of Southwest Iowa’s oldest business firms.


He was a member of the Presbyterian church and was active in community affairs, serving as Adams County U. S. Savings Bond chairman from 1942 to 1960, President of the Adams County Weather Modification Association, and a member of the American Legion and Rotary International.


He was elected to the Iowa Senate in 1956 and served during the 1957 and 1959 sessions from Adams and Taylor Counties.


He died at a Corning hospital Friday, January 12, 1962, at the age of 61.
