Info | Rufus K. Speed was a doctor in Elizabeth City who was also an experienced orator. He was active in the Whig Party in the 1850s and then was nominated by the Constitutional Union Party in 1860 to run as an At-Large Presidential Elector. After the Civil War, Speed was associated with the Conservative Party. Near the end of his life, he was committed to an insane asylum in Raleigh where he died a few days prior to 11/30/1897 (Wilmington Messenger, 11/30/1897). Note: Ancestry has him dying after this newspaper report.
